Question Everything- Especially the Box!

It is clear that revival without evangelism is a dead end. What has been...

It is clear that revival without evangelism is a dead end. What has been revived will only die again. It is also clear that Jesus did not consider the crowds coming to his meetings to be the height of his ministry. The gospels tell us on several occasions that Jesus, “Sent the crowds away.” In John 6 he challenged their motivations for seeking him so strongly that they all left except the twelve and Jesus asked them if they were leaving as well!
Jesus was obviously not sending out fund raising letters based upon the crowds coming to his meetings! We judge success by the size of the crowds and by the feeling of the event. He did not. He sent the crowds away in order to invest himself in the twelve. His teaching and practice show us that he did not consider revival or evangelism to be events. His practice shows us that he considered the most important part of his life was to share relationally with the twelve.
Our teaching and practice that revival and evangelism are events judged by numbers and anointing produce several areas of question. Most of the questions being asked about Lakeland, for example, do not go deep enough. We question where the furniture is placed inside the box but do not question the box!

1/ Can you believe the numbers?
Somebody tracked the number of decisions being reported by evangelistic ministries in Ukraine between 1995 and 2000. Their numbers added up to five times the total population! In trying to verify the source of this statement, I heard similar statements regarding evangelism in Russia. Even if the numbers of descisions were “only” equal to the total population the numbers are suspect. One ministry leader with whom I shared this said, “Well, many go forward several times!” Really! I was told to stop questioning and confronting “or I would lose ministry opportunities”.
A friend discovered that his crusades in India were packed with already christians bused in to create a crowd and coached on coming forward in increasing numbers as the crusade progressed to create excitement. The partner had reported planting sixty churches out of the crusade when he did not have a single congregation.
Basically you can have as large a crusade in India or Africa as you can afford to pay for. Things in the West are more sophisticated but does the media hype create the revival or does the revival create the media hype? Why are miracle stories presented with such conviction but so hard to verify? Why would the team at Lakeland tell one friend to stop questioning when he was seeking verification of the miracles?

2/ Where is the fruit?
Why is it that areas of the world which have had the largest evangelistic events in the history of the world, also have the most corrupt societies? Where is the fruit in changed lives and changed societies?
Why did one of the worst genocides in recent history happen in an area of the world which was the most evangelized? The Great Lakes region of Africa? Rwanda? It is said that Africa has been over evangelized and under discipled.
Recently I was in Ukraine and Armenia and noticed the scores of young people standing in the shadows. Apartments are small. There are no jobs and little money. Most of the night the kids are there hanging around. My question was, “How can we hire these standing idle in the market place for the Kingdom?” The response was that it was almost impossible since most of them had already been through the churches. They experienced the churches to be the same as the mafia or the political culture around them which exists only for the benefit of those at the top. Only too true for much of Africa as well.
We were a part of the revival in the Ukraine. We had anointed conferences with healing and power. We have our miracle stories but much of the “fruit” is back out on the street.

3/ Can you trust the motivation?
Revival is big business. Revival leaders become celebrities. We seem to crave our “Christian” celebrities just as much as the general population does their pop stars. One result is that we wander into Old Covenant understandings of "the man of God" and "the anointing" and miss the anointed priesthood of all believers.
Why do we see such a rush to attend the “revival” by so many ministry leaders? Why does “come and get some” have such an appeal? Why do we not question the obvious materialism of our celebrities?
The short answer is that we want the ministry fame, celebrity status and life style as well. We want the "man of God" status as well. The short answer is that we trust “it will break out” in our ministry. This is a ponzi scheme. So the christians flock for a while and the world remains untouched.
Does God meet genuinely hungry folks in this process. Of course. Does everyone have wrong motivations? Of course not.
But over the past thirty years we have seen several of these moves of revival move through the charismatic church. The church world gets excited. The meetings begin high and slowly wind down and the world remains mostly oblilvious to what has happened. Then the church waits for the next big thing.

4/ What is real?
We know of the revival in China. We know of the church planting movements in some of the most radical Hindu or Moslem parts of the world. They cannot do “revival” meetings. They have no TV ministries, no radio ministries, no mega churches, no schools of minisry, no best selling authors and no leaders with celebrity life styles. They have martyrs, leaders in jail and leaders on the run. Some of them are my friends.
They know that Jesus did not command us to count descision cards. They know that Jesus commanded us to make disciples. They know that Jesus commanded a simple lifestyle of sacrificial giving. They know that disciple making is a relational process not a series of events. They practice discipling unto a decision. They understand why Jesus sent the crowds away and invested His life in a few.
You cannot obey the commands of Jesus from a platform. You can only do so house to house and relationship to relationship. You cannot “love one another” through a TV show. You can share information but you cannot do life transformation. Do we not understand that we have tried to reduce a face to face, heart to heart relational process to a performance event? It simply cannot be done! It could be aruged from fruit and from the New Testament that our western media presentation is simply counter productive or even destructive of kingdom culture.
We know about the revival in China but we do not want to learn its lessons. We want platforms, and celebrity life styles. We do not want to pay the price in humility and servanthood to do the commands of Jesus one life at a time.
When you are on the platform, you are the most important person in the room. Anyone in the crowd could leave and never be missed. When you are in the home of a man of peace in obedience to Luke 10, you are always the servant and the one you are sharing with is the most important person in the room. That is what Jesus wants to multiply!

Where friends are simply doing the commands of Jesus, they are seeing continous revival and fruitful evangelism. Mass movement into the Kingdom most often does not come from the center of society. It comes from the fringes. It comes from the edges when we begin to do the one another stuff with the least. Kingdom multiplication comes when invest our lives in the few and teach them to do the same.

The prophets keep speaking. Ori Brafman and Rod Beckstram declare in "The Starfish...

The prophets keep speaking. Ori Brafman and Rod Beckstram declare in "The Starfish and the Spider" "the unstoppable power of leaderless organizations". These are organizations whose unity is through shared values (like the house church movement in China) rather than centralized leadership.

Ricardo Semler declares in "The Seven Day Weekend" the release of creativity and excellence through non hierarchical leadership. He sees the main task of leadership to be nurturing the atmosphere of creativity and collective responsibility through releasing each to their gifts and passions rather than command and control.

Robert Fritz has written "Your Life as Art" and "The Managerial Moment of Truth". A friend in England was telling me about his work. Yes, Fritz is another prophet from the realm of business but I believe they are prophesying more accurately than most in the church world. They have to have measurable results or nobody will listen to them.

Robert Fritz is dealing with how we market, train and grow. Conventional multi level marketing companies reward those who recruit the most in the least amount of time. Star performers may recruit several hundred in three or four months but generally most of those recruits become "non performers" by the end of their first year. Not a very good result. And parallels to mass evangelism are not accidental.

Fritz challenges his clients to truly invest in people. So if you are involved in health products, you work with a small group of three to seven and walk with them for at least a year to actually see them through to the health that your product was created to produce. That is step one. Fritz sees your role here as that of a teacher/trainer. This is not just about information but life formation.

The goal is not to draw as large a crowd as quickly as possible. Experience teaches that such short term success is generally long term fruitlessness and frustration.

Fritz's second step is to identify ONE person who is interested in helping others to use your products and to work with that one person for at least three months to enable them to become a teacher as well. The point is that if you become the teacher/trainer for their friends, they will never do so. You step back from being the teacher and, in Fritz's terminology you become the mentor. You help this one to succeed as a teacher/trainer of their small circle.

If this sounds like Jesus in Luke 10 where he instructs us to remain in the house of peace and teach them to become the pastor of their family and friends, that is because it is exactly what Jesus is teaching! We confuse numbers with success. Jesus sent the crowds away to invest His life in the twelve. He asks us to do the same!

The third step for Fritz happens when you have a group of three to seven that you are investing in as their mentor and who have begun to do the same. You then step back again to become their manager. Maybe our terms would be that you become a grandfather or the resource person for those you have taught to be apostles.

The reality is that God is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He is the God of the three generations and we must keep stepping back as we release the generations of Jesus Christ or we stop the process and create dependency amongst those averse to risk and frustration in those who thrive on risk. We simply stop the multiplication of the generations of Jesus.

Your gift may draw a crowd but when your gift leaves so does the crowd. The same crowd that wanted to make Jesus King wanted to kill him a short time later. Your success is not in the crowd. Your success is not even in your sons. Have you laid your life down as a foundation so that your sons can multiply the generations of Jesus?

Success is in your grandsons!

Steve & Marilyn

Our fascination with celebrities often becomes...

In John 16:7, Jesus is telling the disciples that "It is to your advantage that I go away". After three years with Jesus, after all the miracles and after all the dreams of the Kingdom it comes to this? How could it possibly be better without Jesus? How could it possibly be better without the moment by moment flesh and blood presence of Jesus?

We know the rest of the verse! "For if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you: but if I depart, I will send Him to you."

Jesus, the best, wisest, most anointed leader who ever walked on the face of the earth was leaving the men he had discipled for three years. Earlier He had called them "friends" and destroyed the possibility of any hierarchical system truly representing His kingdom but now he takes it all one step further! He is leaving the scene!

It is better that they know His indwelling presence by the Holy Spirit than for them to have His physical presence! It is better that His friends walk as He walked by inward revelation of the Father and His voice than by outward command! Jesus was so confident of the ability of the Holy Spirit to lead into all truth, to reveal His person and to reveal His Father that He was willing to leave. He was willing to trust His friends to the Holy Spirit! And we think we are needed?

Healthy leadership disciplines towards trust and release energized by love! Unhealthy leadership controls towards dependence and is driven by fear. True leadership knows the time to go and leave the friends to the Holy Spirit! If you do not demonstrate your trust in the Holy Spirit in your friends, they never will learn to do so either!

Do we have the same trust in the Holy Spirit that Jesus has?
How are you relating to others?
Do you have friends or servants?
Is Jesus free to build?

Let me close with some links:
1/ Have you read the Jake Colsen story, "So you do not want to go to church anymore?" It is a free download on www.jakecolsen.com/ and is available in Spanish, French, German, Dutch and Russian. This is a novel which clearly, passionately presents the issues! As Jake says, "We keep trying to find the right way to do church to release the life of God but it is the life of God which releases the church!" Enjoy!

2/ Disturbed by the controversy around the Lakeland healing revival? Some are even talking about lying signs and wonders! A lying sign and wonder is a statue that bleeds pointing people to pray to some dead person! It is a shaman that can change shape to a hyena, to a snake, to a tiger and back to a man again. A lying wonder is not a healing in Jesus name, completed while Jesus is being worshiped and accomplished in a person who then stands up to give testimony of being healed by Jesus! True there is little preaching of repentance but then it is not called a revival of repentance. It is call a "healing revival"!

Todd Bentley does give the critics stuff to talk about with his appearance and style but if you would like to read his response to the critics you could go on his website www.freshfire.ca/index.php?Id=1059&pid=993 and see what he has to say for himself.

3/ Beautiful, inspirational, art posters by our friends David and Renate Sorensen from Belgium. Mailed from the UK or the USA. Check them out at www.lifeposters.org

Responsibility!

Hello Friends
We keep having this conversation about the several responsibilities that one must...

Hello Friends

We keep having this conversation about the several responsibilities that one must accept if any church is to work. Folks join up with a simple community and then discover that the freedom brings responsibility! It would seem as though some actually prefer freedom from responsibility to the responsibilities of freedom! Sitting in the stands watching the game carries no inherent risk but actually playing the game carries the risk of failure as one of the prices of the possibility of victory.

THE RESPONSIBILITY TO BECOME A SELF FEEDER!
If a church meeting is defined as a community where each one contributes something (and I Corinthians 14:26 is the only New Testament instruction on how to do church!) then each member must take responsibility to seek Jesus for themselves in order to be able to make a play! They must become a self feeder! We enjoy feeding our children when they are small but not when they are going to school! It is amazing to hear "mature" christians complain about how their pastor does not feed them! Is she/he really supposed to? If the Lord is your Shepherd then let Him lead you by the still waters and make you lie down in green pastures! Unless you feed on Him, you have no life in you!

THE RESPONSIBILITY TO DISCIPLE YOUR OWN KIDS!
Often one of the first things that people say when introduced to simple church concepts is "What about the kids?" Indeed! If you cannot disciple your own kids, how can you disciple the nations? John Wesley began sunday schools to give basic education to poor children who were working twelve hours per day, six days per week in the mills of the early industrial revolution. He forbade children from christian families to attend the sunday schools. Why? If the children of christian families attended the sunday schools it would erode the responsibility of the fathers to educate their children!

Do you really think that forty minutes a week with a sunday school teacher will over come the hours of influence of the electronic baby sitter that your kids enjoyed while you pursued whatever was of interest to you? If you do not care enough to get on the field with your kids who will you get on the field with?

THE RESPONSIBILITY TO SPEAK THE TRUTH TO ONE ANOTHER IN LOVE!
Without this there is no maturity! In some circles Ephesians 4:11 has been quoted to death and used to set up hierarchical structures (Think Pope, Cardinal, Bishop, Priest! Now think Apostle, Prophet, Pastor, Elder!) while the "till we all come" and "the whole body" stuff of "speaking the truth in love" and all the flat implications of verses 13 to 16 get ignored! What is it about Matthew 23:8- 12 and all the "woe unto you"s that is difficult to understand? What about John 15:12- 15 is hard to understand? The highest is friendship!

Cruising through ministry websites you often see that one of the reasons given for joining their structure is "accountability". One site states that they believe in "personal pastoring" and that "every pastor needs a pastor". If experience has taught us anything it is this- if a man will not be accountable to Jesus and open with his friends, he certainly will not be open to the off site "authority"! No one is so easily deceived as the off site authority! You can be treated like a mushroom- kept in the dark and fed horse manure! Your friends know you! Listen to them! Speak to them! If you do not love your brother enough to confront him, you reject him!

THE RESPONSIBILITY TO SERVE YOUR WORLD AND MAKE DISCIPLES!
Nothing exposes our spiritual barrenness and lack of meaningful relationships like accepting the responsibility of partnering with Jesus to see the birth of new sons and daughters! We keep ourselves busy with the false comfort of endless rounds of "spiritual" activity rather than face this reality!

Your task is not to find a community that meets your needs! That is shopping! Your task is to create community for those who do not have it! That is mission!

Jesus was so involved with those that needed Him that he was accused by the religious establishment of being "a friend of sinners". Would there be enough evidence to convict you of the same charge? Or do you spend most of your time busy in the Christian ghetto? If you are going to have influence in the world, you will need to enjoy spending some time in the "smoking section"! You will have to get on the field and take the risks of rejection and failure. That is life- no battles, no victories!

"Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage....... For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision or uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love." Galatians 5:1 & 6

Enjoy your freedom!
Pay your price!
Jesus did!

Hello Friends

Some "Yeah God!" stories from our recent three weeks in Central Asia. A big thanks to all of you for friendship, prayer and financial support. These are your stories as well!

A petite Dungan lady came to one of the team days seeking prayer. Her womb was full of cancer. We all prayed! Last Friday she had another appointment with her doctors and they were very confused to find no trace of cancer! She was not confused and gave them a clear testimony to Jesus! Well done Doctor Jesus!

Emile and his family are the only followers of Jesus in their village of 120 families. The first months of their walk with Jesus were rough! Their son had his arm broken during a beating at school. They recently had another crises when his father died. How would they bury a follower of Jesus in the village? At first the Imam would not let them bury father in the village cemetery but the neighbors argued that he had been a good man even though he was a follower of Jesus! They finally allowed him to be buried and when the village saw that they buried him in the Muslim style (wrapped in a sheet rather than the Orthodox style) they all became even more open! Now the Imam has asked to talk through the Camel Tracks and Emil is believing for some of his neighbors to become followers of Jesus!

Your prayers and support have enabled us to translate and publish the Camel Tracks into Kyrgyze and for our team to travel to Emil's remote village to support and encourage him!

Akil came to Jesus as a twelve year old boy through reading the New Testament. The Koran instructs all Muslims to read the Old and New Testaments before they read any other books and that is what he did! Upon becoming a follower of Jesus, his family faced great persecution, especially his father who was condemned by the Imam for not being able to control his own son. Akil is now a young father but over the years he has seen many decide for Jesus and then fall back due to persecution. He became convinced that decisions were made too quickly so determined to do things differently. Recently he invited a mixed group of Muslims and followers of Jesus to live, read and pray together for six weeks. About sixteen participated. He is convinced that we must disciple to decision! Interesting conclusion since that is also the conclusion of many working with disciple making and church planting movements! We are to make disciples not count decision cards!

Your prayers and support have enabled our team to present forty Kyrgyze bibles to Akil and to encourage him in his walk with Jesus. He is believing Jesus for healing from Hep A. Please remember Akil in your prayers!

The government of Kyrgyzstan has proposed legislation to make it an offense for any group to "proselytize" (speak about Jesus!) while doing charitable work. A part of this legislation would require any church wishing to register to have a minimum of two hundred members. That does not sound dangerous for house churches but similar legislation in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan has resulted in house churches being raided and members being imprisoned!

Your prayers and support for the church in Central Asia are deeply appreciated!
Steve & Marilyn

Hello Friends
Marilyn and I will be in Central Asia April 6- 26. What are we doing there?...

Hello Friends

Marilyn and I will be in Central Asia April 6- 26. What are we doing there?

Our task is to help the local team to identify, train and release apostolic servants to their culture.

IDENTIFY: The task of identifying apostolic gift is accomplished through relationship, basic training and fruit. The fruit test is to have raised up disciples and planted at least three communities of disciples.

TRAIN: The task of training is accomplished primarily by doing. Yes, we help with providing, translating and publishing simple materials (based upon the instruction of Jesus in Luke 10) but we only learn to obey Jesus by obeying Jesus, not by talking about obeying Jesus!

RELEASE: The task of releasing is accomplished through encouragement, impartation, recognition of fruit and provision of bibles, materials and finances. Local leaders must be self-sufficient but apostolic gifts need to be sent to pioneer new areas! They need finances to travel, communicate and to provide simple help wherever they go.

A friend in Armenia lives on the top floor of his apartment building. Recently the roof was blown off by spring storms and the rain and cold now flow into their apartment. The other apartments below them in the building do not care since they are not affected or maybe cannot care since they are equally as poor! This friend and his wife have five small children plus her mother staying with them in their four room apartment. A children's bible club meets there once per week and this brother walks to three villages to care for groups of disciples. The cost to repair the roof is almost a full year's income for them- $1200. In a world of need, this is a small tragedy! I did not promise to meet the need but I did promise to ask my friends. Will you help us help them?

Funds given beyond that amount will be applied to the needs of the team in Central Asia. You may place your gift on Harvest Now, Houten, ABNA #405606087

We have team in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan but hundreds of villages remain with no witness to Jesus! Would you pray with us for laborers for these fields as well as the fields of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and North West China?

You are invited to join us every Wednesday as we and our team members fast and pray to bless the Muslim nations.

For the Harvest!
Steve & Marilyn Hill

Hi Friends

We have received some very interesting responses to Lee Grady's review of "The Midas Touch" where Kenneth Hagin rebukes his disciples for their greed and manipulative fund raising tactics. In light of how widespread prosperity teachings have become and in light of your responses we want to present you with a series of confrontations. This letter is longer than normal so pour a coffee, get your bible, look up the scriptures, give it a go and let me know what you think! It will be on our website and you can post your responses there if you like. Be warned! This is not a teaching. It is a series of confrontations! Some of these confrontations are raw and unresolved in me. How is it true that if one member of the body suffers, we all suffer? How do I suffer along with the poor? How does the equality of II Corinthians 8:14 work out in this global village? How do I walk out Acts 20:34- 35?
Thank you for sharing our journey!
Steve & Marilyn

1/ CONFRONTING LEGALISM AND CONTROL!
Most of what we have heard and taught about money is wrong. It is wrong because it is based upon the foundation of the eleventh commandment, "Thou shalt pay thy tithes to thy local church." And, of course that comes with a blessing if you do and a curse if you do not! Thus legalism is the foundation of most thinking regarding finances. We need to clear the rubble and get to the solid foundation of Christ!

The first church council (Acts 15) met to decide how much of the Old Testament law the gentile converts should be required to keep. The decision? None except the moral law. The only financial suggestion was that they remember the poor (Galatians 2:10). Your financial blessing has nothing to do with paying tithe anymore than you can get more forgiveness by killing little goats. In Christ, you are in a New Covenant and that covenant covers all aspects of life!

Why does legalism have such appeal? We all like to feel in control our future. If we do this, then God must do that! Nowhere is this desire for control more evident than in the area of finances! Nowhere is this desire more evident than in the area of seeking to control God. His freedom frightens us! The simple responsibility to obey His voice frightens us!

Some orthodox Jews take their control impulse to its logical extreme and believe that if they could just get their community to keep one perfect sabbath, the Messiah would come! Some tithing teachers take their legalistic control impulse to its logical conclusion and teach that if the whole congregation would tithe, that congregation would experience revival! Really!

The orthodox are trying to control behavior to make something happen which has already happened! What a waste! The Messiah has come! The tithing teachers are also trying to make something happen which has already happened! What a waste! We have already been blessed "with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ" (Ephesians 1:3). Why is being in Christ not enough? All legalistic activity is practical denial of the sufficiency of the cross!

Then we have some teaching that it is the "honor" of spiritual sons to tithe to their "apostolic" fathers. The basic criteria that Paul lays down in 2 Corinthians 11 and 12 for discerning false apostles is their practice of using the church as a source of money and their gifting to extort it. He even declares (verse 14 of chapter 12) that he did not "seek yours but you. For the children ought not to lay up for the parents but the parents for the children." When have you ever heard that "apostolic" preaching? The one with the more mature faith should be giving to the ones he considers sons!

Now for something practical! Yes, the law is gone and replaced by the responsibility to love! Someone has said, "You can give without loving but you cannot love without giving!" So some good friends practice the discipline of "proportional" giving. In recognizing our propensity to selfishness and materialism, they commit to giving a certain portion of their income to the cause of Christ. Others determine what they will live on, what they will save and commit to give away everything above that. The general New Testament instruction is from I Corinthians 16:2, "let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper". However, this offering was not for buildings, administration, salaries but for the poor saints of Jerusalem. Offerings in the New Testament were primarily for the poor and secondarily for apostolic teams pioneering new areas for the gospel.

We need to break with materialism and embrace simplicity. How do you think about the next thing your culture says you have to have? My thoughts go something like this, "At $2.00 a bible how many bibles would that buy? At $30 per month per child, how many children would that give a life to?" Neither the pizza or the new car seem so important!

The purpose of giving in the New Testament is so that there would be an equality! Read II Corinthians 8: 13- 15. Read it again! Now try to get your mind around some Christian ministers having personal jets and many not having bibles or food. Oh yes, the jet set like to teach from II Corinthians 8:9 but when have you heard any teaching from verses 13- 15? They also like to teach that the poor are poor "because they do not have faith". That would pretty much be blaming the victims! The testimony of the scripture (James 2:5) is that "God has chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith"! Many friends lack food and bibles. How do I honor their faith? How do we work out equality in a cross cultural body? How do I live between two cultures?

Even while Paul praises the Philippian church (Philippians 4:14- 19) for supporting him on his apostolic journeys and while the New Testament records such support as normal, "If we have sown spiritual things for you, is it a great thing if we reap your material things?" (I Corinthians 9:11), he still lays down self support as the better way! Acts 20:34- 35 "Yes, you yourselves know that these hands have provided for my necessities and for those who were with me. I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, It is more blessed to give than to receive."

Why does he lay down this principle of self support as normal? This is a simple outworking of the priesthood of all believers. We are all brothers and servants. There is only one King.

This is the language of freedom, of sacrifice and of sons in relation to their Father.
This is the language of giving and receiving the Kingdom.

How do we work out this self support thing and travel East? How do we handle the tension between that and Romans 10:14- 15 "... and how shall they preach unless they are sent?" Thank you to those of you who send! Thank you to those of you who have stood with us in giving and receiving the Kingdom!

2/ CONFRONTATION OF METHODS!
But do we not need large sums for large events, for media presentations, for the buildings and infrastructure to support it all? How can you do that and be self supporting? America is saturated with Christian media and events of all sorts and yet the cultural indicators are all downhill. The Kingdom is not increasing! Why is it that cultures where poverty and persecution make Christian access to media and large events impossible, are seeing dramatic increases of the Kingdom of God?

Jesus sent the crowds away so that He could invest His life in forming the twelve and He gave us the same command, make disciples. He trusted the increase of the Kingdom to the multiplication of relationships. Lives are formed and relationships multiplied through living life together. We view crowd size as the measure of success! He did not! He gave us a command that requires the one resource to fulfill and we all have equal access to it. That resource is time. Time spent with the few!

Why does the Kingdom multiply under oppression? The disciples are forced to do the Kingdom stuff of one on one relationship. They are forced to fulfill the 60 "one another" commands of the New Testament. They are forced to do the gospel of the Kingdom! You cannot suffer together without character, obedience, loving service and sacrifice! Given freedom, name, gifting and money you can organize an event. However, it takes grace, obedience and often suffering to connect hearts.

Why does the Kingdom not increase through media, events and information? You cannot do Kingdom from a stage! You can have a gospel of healing! You can have a gospel of prosperity! You can have a gospel of self fulfillment but you cannot obey the commands of Jesus while standing on a platform! Christian media runs on the same fuel as any other media. It values personality over integrity, performance over obedience, style over service and gifting over character. Most christian media personalities have the same goal as any other media personality, to become famous and enjoy a star lifestyle. The system is designed to produce exactly what it is producing!

Most of what we have heard and taught about money is wrong because it is focused on bricks and mortar, events and programs while Jesus said that whatever is done unto the least is done unto Him. The Matthew 25 imperative gets lost in the drive to project power, success and growth.

Here is the question! Would we be more effective with more money? Or would we just spend more on media, information, events and spend less time doing the heart to heart stuff of actually making disciples? In that case would more money means less effectiveness? How do we differentiate between costly humanitarian work and making disciples? If a man has nothing to eat, it is difficult to talk about his future!

3/ BEING CONFRONTED BY WHAT JESUS DID ON THE CROSS!
In many circles Malachi chapter three has become one of the most well known chapters in the whole Old Testament! However, the particulars of Malachi chapter three have nothing to do with your financial blessing or cursing anymore than the particulars of Hosea chapter one have anything to do with the blessing or cursing of your relational life. Both chapters are spoken to a particular people at a particular point in their history and we are not those people! There are lessons to be drawn but not particulars to be obeyed!

What are the spiritual lessons from Malachi three? They all point to a better covenant! Jesus redeemed us from the curse of the law (Galatians 3:13). Do we not understand that "if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain." (Galatians 2:21)? Do we not yet understand that if we keep one part of the law, we are "a debtor to keep the whole law." (Galatians 5:3)? We cannot just choose the parts of the law we like because it happens to be useful to finance our programs!

Jesus rebuked the devourer for us, once and for all (Hebrews 2:14- 15, Colosians 2:14- 15)! Do we not understand that if we try to pay God to rebuke the devourer, we are really acting out unbelief in what Jesus did on the cross and that when we act in unbelief we actually empower the enemy!

Jesus opened heaven for us once and for all (Hebrews 10:19) and not just its "windows"! God is not being tested in this! We are! Will we believe what Jesus has done on the cross or will we believe our circumstances and try to come up with new "spiritual technologies" to deal with them?

The Old Testament ends with the book of Malachi and the book of Malachi ends with the word "curse".
Jesus took the curse of the law to the cross.
Leave it there!

4/ CONFRONTING MOTIVATIONS!
It is said that the motivation for teaching tithing and sowing and reaping is so that the people will be blessed. We see that is suspect! However, if that is the motivation, the teachers should push saving and investing as hard as they push tithing. That is what the Old Testament did! The law mandated saving and investing. That was the law just as much as giving a tithe. That was the foundation of the wealth of the nation!

IF we had saved the amount which we gave as tithe over the years and IF we had invested that money at 10% (the rate at which the principle doubles every seven years according to compound interest, the eighth wonder of the world!), most of us who have been believers for 35 years or more would be millionaires! Think how much we could give now!

IF the motivation for teaching Old Testament law concerning the tithe is blessing, then we should also teach the law of saving and investing. That is true financial sowing and reaping.

IF tithes and offerings did produce a "one hundred fold" return, as Kenneth Hagin notes in "The Midas Touch" we should all have billions. He rebuked his sons for this false teaching! IF what the prosperity preacher says is true, he should be giving you his money and reaping the hundred fold. He should not need your money! After all sow $100 and reap $10,000! Oh, but you have to sow in faith! What is wrong with his faith? Why does he keep asking you for your money? He keeps asking you for your money because this simply does not work! This is fraud and it is so pervasive that we accept such teaching as normal!

When Jesus told the rich young ruler (Luke 18:22) to sell all he had, it was not to bring the money to Jesus Ministries International. He was to give that money to the poor, not to reap a wealth in this life but to place treasure in heaven! When Zacchaeus (Luke 19:8) was convicted about financial wrong doing, he committed to give half of his goods to the poor and restore stolen funds five fold. Again, nothing for Jesus Ministries International! There was a group of women who provided for the needs of the team (Luke 8:3) but Jesus did not take up offerings for Himself! That should tell us something about guarding motivation! Follow the money and find the motivation!

The only place in the New Testament where financial reaping is promised to those who sow is II Corinthians 9 and the promise is based in giving to the poor! However, our whole teaching about giving has been corrupted by the premise of giving to get. Giving is supposed to involve sacrifice! Remember the widow of Luke 21:1- 4? The value of her giving was in the depth of her sacrifice. Love sacrifices. Greed calculates. However, did you note that in the II Corinthians 9 one of the things being reaped was the prayers of those being helped! How do you calculate the value of those prayers?

Proverbs 22:16 is a very interesting verse, "He who oppresses the poor to increase his riches and he who gives to the rich will surely come to poverty." Why do we give to the rich? We hope for something in return! That is the same spirit as stealing from the poor! Jesus condemned our propensity to do things in hope of return and commanded us to serve those who cannot pay us back and to place treasure in heaven (Luke 14:12- 14).

John Wesley said it best, "Make all you can. Save all you can. Give all you can!"

Ultimate motivation is the glory of God.
Ultimate service to Jesus is to serve the least!

For a more thorough teaching, check out our article, "The Tithe and the Covenants" in the Resources section of www.harvest-now.org or check out this excellent resource http://tekoapublishing.com/books/tithing/index.html from Matthew Narramore.

For a reality check you could watch John Piper on You Tube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukcV-xtU3hc !

Every blessing
Steve & Marilyn .

Hello FriendsOur world seems determined to lose the meaning of this season in a mess of painted...

Hello Friends
Our world seems determined to lose the meaning of this season in a mess of painted eggs and chocolate rabbits. Yes, I realize that they are symbols of resurrection and new life and I like chocolate (especially if it is dark!) but it is not the commercialization that is a problem for me. Candy companies will do what candy companies do and exploit any reason to sell more candies!

My question is this. Have we lost the meaning of the season in our presentation of the gospel? John says (John 3:36A), "He who believes in the Son has everlasting life." We would all agree with that and we would all agree that Jesus died to give us that life. At one time or another we have all proclaimed as good news that God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life!

That is half true, maybe! The rest of the verse says "and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him".

What cup did Jesus drink on Good Friday? Yes, the cup of suffering which He told His disciples they would also drink. A prophetic word which became terrible true as they all died martyrs' deaths. But they died those deaths with martyrs' grace, with joy and with eternity in their eyes! Why did Jesus ask that the cup should pass from Him? Was He more afraid of Roman nails than His disciples? I do not think so.

In the New Testament there are almost as many references to the wrath of God as there are to the love of God! We can receive forgiveness and life because Jesus has drained the cup of the wrath of God's judgement for our sin. God crushed God. Jesus paid the price for my independence and rebellion against Him.

That is the other half of the good news! For truth to be living it is always in tension. It is always a living tension in the person of Jesus. He is the Son of God and the Son of Man. He is the Word made flesh. He gives life because He satisfied the wrath of God. He can forgive sin because He took the fullness of the penalty for sin.

The Good News that God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life is only half true! God loves you but His plan for your life may not fit the Western Dream of wonderful! Did God have a wonderful plan for the life of the first martyr? Did Stephen's fiance think that was a wonderful plan? But that is another story!

He is the Lamb slain from before the foundation of the world. Yes! But the day of His wrath is also coming when men will flee from Him (Revelation 6:16- 17). When have you last heard a sermon on the wrath of the Lamb? That is the other half of the gospel!

We have collective embarrassment about the true nature of God. We want our culture to like our God. Wrath does not make Him likable! However, our God does not want to be liked. Like is not an option! We love Him or hate Him! And one reason I love Him is because He is angry when little people are abused! He is angry when His creative purposes for His children are violated. Without wrath good and evil are equally meaningless and forgiveness is total nonsense.

God's problem was how to forgive in love but satisfy justice! How could He be "just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus" (Romans 3:23)? His righteousness could be satisfied through the blood of Christ Jesus. The good news is that the blood of God satisfied the righteousness wrath of God over sin.

Paul knew "the terror of the Lord" and thus sought to "be well pleasing to Him" and to "persuade men" that we must "all appear before the judgement seat of Christ" (II Corinthians 5:9- 11). Maybe we would all be much more persuasive if we knew something of the terror of the Lord?

Jesus knew "the terror of the Lord" in the garden.
That was the cup He did not want to drink.

Psalm 130:4, is one of the most sobering scriptures to me, "But there is forgiveness with You, that you may be feared." Forgiveness, Yes! But since there is forgiveness, and God's forgiveness means grace for freedom from sin, my sin and selfishness is without excuse!

The love of God is not nice.
The love of God is fierce.
The love of God is awesome.
The love of God is a consuming fire!
The love of God overcomes the wrath of God by the blood of God!

That is Good News!
And that is why they call this Friday, Good!

Steve & Marilyn Hill

(From the Centering on Christ Files)

Hello Friends
It has been interesting to read several glowing reports from different streams about New Year Leadership Summits. The reported characteristic of the summits has been to gather without an agenda except to wait on God. The reports talk about participants laying down their identity in gifting, ministry, success, position and how refreshing it was to simply be humble before each other and before God as brothers and sisters in Christ.

Wonderful!
Wonderful?

This is following Jesus 101.
This should be normal.

The first step of discipleship is to lay down our right to ourselves, take up our cross and follow Jesus. The Jesus we follow could say, "I only do those things I see my Father doing." "I only say those things that I hear my Father saying." "If you have seen me, you have seen the Father."

Contemporary Christendom is such a culture of self-expression, success and celebrity that a little bit of normal New Testament reality is seen as a breakthrough? We have baptized the pride of life and naked ambition as God giving us the desires of our hearts. We have baptized the lust of the eyes and unrestrained materialism as the blessing of God. We have baptized the lust of the flesh as the desire of God to make us happy and blessed serial polygamy as a result.

Jesus did not teach that following Him would give you your best life now. He taught that following Him would cause you suffering now. He taught that following Him was a narrow way and a difficult way.

Have we met Jesus?
Have we wrestled with His commands!

For a weekly jolt of reality you may wish to subscribe to the free email newsletter from the Voice of the Martyrs. Visit them at www.persecution.com/ A regular exposure to the suffering church will help you see the gospel of western materialism, self expression and success for what it really is- heresy!

As Oswald Chambers said so well, "The satanically managed man is not the man in the gutter. That man has lost all control of his life. He knows he needs help. Satan's ideal man is the self made man. He has no need for God."

The gospel of success takes that one step further and claims to show us how to use God to get what we want! If you do this, God must do that! You are in control! God is your servant! You can have your own personal heaven here on earth!

Why do so many follow the preachers of this heresy and make them wealthy?
The materialism of the leaders excuses, condones and blesses the pursuit of the same in their followers.

We are blessed to be a blessing.
All is His and given to us in trust.
How are we fulfilling His trust?
We will give an account for our stewardship.
Will that be with joy or with shame?

Steve & Marilyn

From the Yeah God Files:

Hello Friends
One of the commands of Jesus in Luke 10 is to pursue family based conversion patterns. We are to go to the home of a person of peace and disciple them in the context of their own home and teach them to become the pastor of their own family and friends. We disobey the clear instruction of Jesus by trying to get them to come to us! As someone has said, "Most of the church has a geography problem. Jesus said we are to go to the world but we want the world to come to us!"

In the book of Acts, Luke testifies to family based conversion patterns in the house of Cornelius and in the house of the Philippian jailer.

One of the characteristic of all Church Planting Movements as identified by David Garrison is "family based conversion patterns". It is wonderful to see this strategic understanding and willingness to obey Jesus catalyzed by divine connection!

Last week Elena was coming out of a prison in KG after visiting one of our prison churches when she was asked by a couple for a ride. They had just been inside visiting a son. She gave them a ride and began to talk. They were of Kurdish background and spiritually hungry. They invited Elena to their home so they could learn more about Jesus. Yesterday Elena took Gulya and went to their home. They talked and prayed for several hours with the result that almost two dozen people of that family from the elders down to grandchildren began a new life with Jesus! Yeah God!

Pray that the Kingdom will spread from that home to others amongst the Kurdish diaspora in KG!

Another of the examples from the book of Acts is the supernatural encounter of Philip with the Ethiopian official. The man was ready and hungry for Philip's instruction. Philip baptized him and sent him on his way! Friends Brian and Ingrid met Elizabeth in Moscow airport. Elizabeth was living there having had her passport and ticket stolen. They shared Jesus with her and asked us to look her up as we went through. We did so and began to take her food, Bibles and books.

Elizabeth has been living in the airport since September of 2006 but is not complaining! She views this has her time to encounter God and learn about Jesus! We have baptized her by placing her under her blankets and raising her up to newness of life in the resurrected Christ.

Last time through Moscow we baptized a young man that Elizabeth led to Christ in the airport! He was from Eritrea who would probably face jail time on being returned to his country. The authorities almost had to drag him away from Elizabeth! He was pleading with them for more time with her so he could learn more about Jesus!

Today we talked with Elizabeth and learned that she has spent the last three days sharing with a man from Sudan! He has been so hungry for more of Jesus that he has refused to use the meal tickets he has been given! Going to eat takes too much time away from his personal Jesus seminar with Elizabeth! That Jesus seminar continues!

Elizabeth is rejoicing over God using her to send missionaries to the nations from Moscow airport!

Jesus open our eyes to see the "families" around us!
Jesus open our eyes to recognize our "divine encounters"!

Thanks so much for your prayers and support so we can serve friends like Elena, Gulya and Elizabeth!

Yeah God!
Steve & Marilyn
